Cell phones are mandatory for all students while studying abroad with EESA. Phones must be charged and turned on at all times. By making cell phones mandatory, EESA ensures that students can be reached at any time both by EESA and their parents, should an emergency arise.
EESA offers an affordable option for all students to rent a basic cell phone upon arrival. The cost is $50 for the duration of the program, whether you’re studying abroad for a semester or a full year. You will be asked to confirm that you wish to use this option prior to departure and will receive a charged cell phone with an activated Ukrainian sim card and a phone number immediately upon arrival. You will be responsible for monthly cell phone usage fees. We ask all EESA students and local staff to stay within the same cell phone network, which allows for virtually free communication between each other. The current plan costs $4 per month and offers 2,000 free minutes and 900 text messages monthly!
To use a cell phone in Ukraine, it must be unlocked and be able to accept a Ukrainian sim card. Therefore, bringing your cell phone from the U.S. generally will cost you much more than renting one in Ukraine. However, if you own a smart phone that can connect to a wireless internet network, you may consider bringing it with you. Even if you can’t use it as a phone if it’s not unlocked, it could come in handy for connecting to internet at many of the free Wi-Fi spots throughout Kharkiv and other cities that you will visit on academic field trips!
